Of anything in the Highlander franchise, the first film is the only one NOT in need of a remake!
Hollywood needs writers with new ideas, not writers wanting to remake old movies & TV shows!

Well, knowing how it goes in the Hollywood game, this could get fast tracked but more likely will linger. When I heard a year and half ago they wanted to do a remake of Highlander, or a re-imagining as it were, I actually wrote a spec script for it.
What I tried to do was totally re-imagine the series while taking aspects of the original film and incorporating them.
My script actually begins with the end, the last 2 immortals facing off in a desolate and destroyed earth in some far flung future where they are indeed the last of humanity. And the final quickening cracks the crust of the scorched planet, shattering it into dust.
It then flashes back, and the MacLeod character, whom I have to say I neglected to give a first name to - thus he is both Connor and Dancan, begins his time as a slave in Egypt, where he is found by Ramirez, who is not named Ramirez during the Egypt section, and is in fact a woman. So for a long while the Ramirez character and the Macleod character have a tense relationship predicated on student, teacher and unrequited lust/sexuality.
MacLeod then becomes a nomad, wandering trying to find a place and a home (sort of becoming the myth of the wandering jew) until the time he saves a clan chief in scotland and is taken in, and though his secret is exposed the chief treats him as a son anyway and is the first non-immortal to not believe him to be a product of lucifer. So for a while he has a home until the Kurgan leads a raid on the village in search of him.
This begins an epic struggle between Macleod and the Kurgan, they have several show downs in several times lending more weight and insatiable death lust to the Kurgan, he is a much more ferocious feral dog characater with only killing and "the prize" on his mind. He kills everyone associated with MacLeod through all time. Playing cat and mouse with him.
The story is about love and loss. The pain of immortality, and in the end the Kurgan is the isolated man, who understands his own drive for death has led them to destruction and that once they are both gone, what point is there to have a prize on a dead planet.
MacLeod beheads the Kurgan anyway, and the Earth explodes. But, "The Prize" is life. The energy of the quickening surrounds the planet, forcing it back in on itself, and like the hand of god the dead embers become oceans and forest and life, and MacLeod and his long lost love become (possibly a new) Adam and Eve (in essence).
Anyway, that was my spec script basis, i thought it worked rather well, becuase while it had plenty of sword fights, it was a story of humanity. I would hope that the new writers will do something wonderful, but hinestly, It will probably be more Highlander 3-4 than 1.

I know how far a great series can fall. If this post is a joke, then everything is fine and dandy. But if not... WHAT THE HELL. This could never and will never EVER be a good idea. I do not mean to insult your creative talent, but seriously man what the nuts! have you actually ever seen Highlander. The World explodes, are you drunk or just retarded. Connor/Duncan is now Egyptian? Ramirez is a chick? Why man , WHY? The whole point of a "re-make" is that is has parallels if not the same points as the original. For this film to be a good idea, Highlander 2 would have to have been a cinematic masterpiece, and would have not made me want to kill myself. I really hope you are joking. I don't know what else to really say aside from remaking a great movie is a dumb idea. Thank you and good day. |

He didn't say he was remaking, he said he was re-imagining. In that context it's a more palatable idea. Not sure how much more. I'd need to see previews containing footage that didn't make it to the theaters before I could decide that.  |

For me the idea of remaking Highlander is unsatisfactory, it's a movie that doesn't necessitate it, and certainnly not at this juncture. However, since they ARE doing so, or pushing to do so, I optioned to reimagine the story instead. Thus creating a secondary mythos, instead of saying the first one is crap, let's forget it all and just do it again and make some money. As for imakindofmagic's post. I am indeed a fan, a very large fan of Highlander. MacLeod is not actually Egyptian, we just pick him up as a slave in Egypt at the first meeting. He is older than that. Ramirez as a woman works incredibly well, it creates a new level to the mentor relationship. Also adds another female role of importance to the movie. Thus creating the MacLeod character's heavy connection to women through out time. The Prize being life seems logical, from a dead and decaying planet to create a new "big bang" and thus begin life a new on Earth, seems worth winning. Very much like the prize in the original film, knowing everything, feeling everything, being connected to everything. Except, wait, that's not actually the prize, so the prize is... getting to grow old. Cool. Wait, that's not it either. Psych. The prize is... A child. Awesome, until... Blow the Earth up, have it reform becomes a pretty definitive answer to the prize, being the essence of creation seems pretty good to me. But that's me, I know most people would hate my concept, but the truth is, fans of Highlander are really going to hate any remake or reimaging concept that comes along, and that's the breaks. From a storytelling aspect I feel I need to comment.
Your Prize (interesting concept btw) involves the Earth being destroyed, reformed, and granting new life to the planet and humanity. In your concept story this occurs when MacLeod and the Kurgan are basically the only two people on the destroyed planet, re-creating the world in a new and brighter image with life and beauty.
My question for you is....what if someone won the prize BEFORE the Earth fell to ruins and there were only the two Immortals left? I'm aware that Immortals don't know what the Prize is but I doubt any good/decent Immortal would want the world destroyed and everyone they know killed when they win the Prize. They don't know this would happen of course, but afterward I think any decent human being would be so disgusted with what he just caused that he would kill himself.
This, to me, seems like a really terrible Prize (but I will admit its an interesting concept). For viewers/readers to buy the whole "The Prize is life" bit I think you would need to tweak it a lot, otherwise it only makes sense in the context of your story and any fan that asks "but what if" will see what I just pointed out and think the whole thing is stupid.

Unless in the context of his story, the time of the "gathering" was to conincide with the apocalypse... in other words, the immortals hvae no real decision on when the "gathering" is... just that it will happen, and the gathering happens to coincide with the end of days. Each cycle being that way... and the immortal who wins, reshapes the world in his image. If a "good" guy wins, the world starts again in an image of life and beauty... if an "evil" immortal wins, then the world becomes a dark world filled with corruption. Either way, its an interesting concept to think of, BUT, if they deviate much from the original script I'll be pissed. I dont mind some minor changes to bring it up to date... such as ditching the Queen soundtrack. Its kind of hard to think of Kurgan as a hard ass when he's rocking out to Queen in his car... just sayin. Ewan McGregor for Connor, and we could have a movie better then the first one. Every other role is easy enough to cast wi thout looking for big names. Ramirez isnt that important... we just need someone who can teach Connor to swordfight, and then go all gay and run along the beach yelling about being brothers. Preferably Connor cuts his head off then and says thats not how he rolls... but assuming he doesnt, the person playing Ramirez just has to die soon after to the Kurgan. I am not completely sold on Karl Urban as the Kurgan. Call me old fashioned, but I still see The Kurgan as this hulking barbarian. I just am not seeing him as being imposing enough for me. Ewan McGregor as Connor though? Spot on. Although not really taller, I could see Vin Diesel as The Kurgan, if not for the voice and attitude alone. Or possibly that wrestler that played "The Russian" in The Punisher.
