First off, I would like to thank everyone for their support and patience throughout the Beta Base Set kickoff of Highlander 2nd Edition. And, even though some people are just now opening their first packs of the Season One (BETA) Edition, we are quickly approaching the release of the Season One Expansion (BETA 2). So I thought we’d take a moment to look towards the future and release some spoilers…but first, let’s take a look at what seems to be an accelerated release schedule and the purpose behind it.
Now, I know that three to four months for two sets to be released is way above the curve and really down right ridiculous for a card game to even consider. I mean, players don’t even get accustomed to one set before another is already hitting the shelves, so why on earth would Highlander 2nd edition follow this release pattern. Let me start my explanation by trying to get everyone to rethink the actual schedule. First off, the Season One Base Set and the Season One Expansion are in all essence just one full edition. Season One all told will contain 25 Fixed, 75 Rare, 75 Uncommon, & 75 Common cards for a total of 250. Which, when looked at that way is just about the size that all major card manufacturers follow for their once every four month editions. So, if that’s the case, why did we decide to split the set into two different packages? To be honest, when we originally designed the Season One set, we had eight personas, six weapons, and a slew of generic cards. But, then we took a look at past expansions and the mess of errata and confusion that surrounded every edition released and realized that it might not be a bad idea to stagger the edition out over time, giving us and the players a chance to see broken issues and fix them in a mere two months instead of four...hopefully adding to the tournament experience in the process. So, while Season One set the groundwork for 2nd Edition and the way see Highlander being played until the Ramirez edition, Season One’s expansion is designed to shake-up the popular ideas and bring some powerful combos back to earth before a whole bunch of new personas are dropped into your lap and we never have time to balance what the original edition threw out.
So with that in mind, let’s take a look at a card designed to fix one of Slan’s (among other power immortals) main problems…his lack of Empathy and how it pertains to the toolbox cards.
Collateral Damage EVENT
Great Sword
Play in conjunction with a Power Blow. If your opponent successfully dodges this attack, during your next turn you may remove one Object, Situation, Plot, or Location from play.
Since Focus and Police are both Empathy cards, we have seen already in tournaments Slan’s inability to cope with Situations that interfere with his particular style. To balance this, enter Collateral Damage. A great toolbox card for those not gifted with brains or the charisma to deal with the tricks his opponent throws at him.
I hope you like it. Stay tuned for more to come…
