Hope all is well with everyone and their families.
Well, we are coming to the end of the three week induction period of the rules updates. Steve and I are glad we implemented this 15 plus years ago, because it not only gives players time to understand and apply these updates but it also brings up questions, opinions, and viewpoints on these updates which we have always reveled in because it lets us know where the players are and their concerns. We thank everyone for their interaction and input. Steve and I have always said we strive for game balance with no personal agendas, and we have proven that over the years, and we still hold to this philosophy. Have we ruffled everyone's feathers at some point? Of course we have, but for the game to be fair for all players, that is part of it, as our goal is game balance. One thing I pointed out at World's and have pointed out in different conversations since is that one thing everyone should keep in mind is that as the game evolves, so do the rules. We have done our best to do what needs to be done to squash broken combos, look ahead for possible problems as well as look behind for potential problems. We know there are sometimes when players look at an update and scratch their head wondering why we did what we did. Most of the time, it is handling a broken combo, however sometimes it is trying to nip a future problem before it arises. So that bearing in mind, first a couple of clarifications due to edition conflicts and terminology conflict. The rest of the update will be "in the rule book" as of tomorrow. These three items will be in a three week induction period beginning today.
1- Divine Intervention / EVENT / R2014-035 /R
Remove the "TRIGGER" keyword.
This eratta was done to explain the intent of the card since there was misunderstandings as far as game mechanics in the last few months. Due to not conflicting with other rulebook entries and mechanics, even though it seems very much like a Trigger effect, it is not due to Game mechanics. This is the best scenario to keep the intent of the card, and retain game balance.
2- Monkey / 4H / SITUATION
This errata is for the 1ed version of the card, as since it does not have the card ID #. The 2ed version of Monkey has no errata in this update.
3- MCBC Pregames
This one was not lightly made, as we have foreseen a major unbalance in the future with the Master card situation. Going back to when these were created, there were not many Master cards, and so it worked well against countering, since there wasn't many Pregame options, so most people ran RIP cards. As time has gone by and the game has evolved, there is a large variety of Pregames now as well as a large variety of "Persona Specific", "Generic", and "Weapon of Choice Specific" Master cards. This being said, the MCBC has become too overpowered with its protection of every Master card you include, and there are combos that even though you may not have seen them, with this kind of protection are broken. One other concept to bear in mind was the fact that "Persona Extension" is not a persona power, and so in essence cannot be targeted. So, knowing we had to do something before this blew up into a fiasco, we took the big step and put this update out there. We knew there would be varying opinions on this but also knew we had the three week induction period to get viewpoints from the players that normally aren't as vocal as others. I have had many conversations with different players about this, which was great, because some of them didn't realize there was an issue. Through the conversations, the subject went from a reactionary response to a "how can we remedy" response. We have put up options before on remedying a rule situation to the players before, and have decided this was one that the community should agree on. The three options below are the best little steps towards the future in this issue. We ask that everyone let us know either here or privately over the next couple of weeks, and we will adjust it accordingly.
OPTION ONE
Place this card before the Game begins in conjunction with (XYZ) Persona.
You begin the Game with +1 Ability.
This Pregame is an extension of your Persona and cannot be targeted by any effect by either player.
Your Persona Specific and Generic gridded Master Cards cannot be countered or removed from the Game.
OPTION TWO (Non-Extension / It can be targeted)
You may only include this card in your Pregame if you are using the (XYZ) Persona.
You begin the Game with +1 Ability.
Your Persona Specific Master cards for the Persona you are playing as cannot be countered or removed from the Game.
OPTION THREE (Non-Extension / It can be targeted)
You may only include this card in your Pregame if you are using the (XYZ) Persona.
You begin the Game with +1 Ability.
Your Persona Specific gridded, Weapon of Choice Specific gridded, and Generic gridded Master Cards cannot be countered or removed from the Game.
Thank you and Happy Holidays,
