Well, we had a lower than normal turnout due to the mini blizzard and scheduling changes for some of our players. We ended up with 5 players, they were:
Jerry S. - Methos/2ed Gladius/2ed Shield
Steve R. - Malick/Broad Bladed Spear
John S. - Kronos/2ed Katana /Kanzashi
Jim B. - Amanda/1ed Rapier
Tony S. - Paul Kinman/2ed Gladius/Kanzashi
Bye
Due to time schedule constraints on a couple of our players, we opted to run Double Elimination instead of Round Robin to speed up the tourney. Worked well. Here are the results:
Round #1
Methos vs Amanda
This match was long and drawn out, as most matches with this style of Methos are. Amanda was hastily thrown together and it showed big time . Never got hit by Methos, just died by Endgame ability loss.
Kronos vs Paul Kinman
I don't know exactly what happened here, but I do know the end result. Kronos was pissed at losing his head to Kinman, and very quickly. Kronos was relieved that Kinman allowed the concede.
Malick vs Bye
Round #2 Winners Bracket
Malick vs Paul Kinman
As I was involved in my match, I once again am not sure how this one went down. It wasn't a long match, but Paul Kinman remained in the Winner's bracket. No head shot.
Methos vs Bye
Loser's Bracket
Amanda vs Kronos
This game didn't go well for Amanda. Nothing spectacular happened during the match, but seeing the direction of the match, and how badly my deck was moving, I opted for the Holy Ground:end game to end my suffering, and keep my head. I have never used that card before, but threw it in because I had no confidence in my deck.
Round #3 Winner's Bracket
Methos vs Paul Kinman
Once again a long drawn out game that ended being a timing issue on Methos' part. This caused Methos to lose the match. Unlike the first round, Methos actually did have some teeth in the third round.
No head shot.
Loser's Bracket
Malick vs Kronos
This was probably the most eye catching match of the evening, Kronos trading blows with Malick. Kronos realized the downfall to the Kanzashi in a bad way. Kronos threw a good game but wasn't up for it, and was dropped to 1 ability fairly quickly, when he lost his head. There was no concede this time.
Round #4 Winner's Bracket
Paul Kinman vs Bye
Loser's Bracket
Malick vs Methos
Methos didn't like Malick at all. Malick was doing well, until out of nowhere Methos showed those teeth and surprised everyone. Malick went down throwing a head shot. Unfortunately, it was defended against. No head shot.
Round #5 Winner's Bracket
Methos vs Paul Kinman
This game went very similar to their first meeting, but Methos did show his teeth. Unfortunately, Kinman had the answer and pulled those teeth for him. No head shot.
End Results
1st- Paul Kinman
2nd- Methos
3rd- Malick
4th- Kronos
5th- Amanda
The main lesson for me in this tourney was, that I shouldn't have played. I threw a deck together last minute, and had no confidence in it. Definitely not my style, and I will have a proper deck next time.
Back to Basics Commentary
This format was decided to be best not used in Type One format. The main consensus, is that we have all spent 10-15 years getting our product and don't like being ham stringed from using it. The beauty of Type One is diversity, and taking that away was not received well.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dcapotate- Good for new players only!
Headlessone- Worthless, drastic waste of time. Hate the fact that I spent all that time and money to be restricted from playing what I have. I don't want to do this again.
Tony S. - I think it is stupid!! I finally have my own set of Crystals, and I want to use them!!! I will not play this format again.
Prowler- He can insert his own opinion.
Headswillroll- I think that is a good possible format for new Type Two players. Older players are going to have issues with this, because of the investment that they have put into their collection, and their ability to play what they have. This really shows in Type One. Type Two is still new enough that this view point isn't as prevalent.
Group Result- This format is not a good direction for Type One format, since it is contradictory to the basis of this format. It is best for new player's not old ones. We all learned the hard way, which meant playing against decks full of Q's/Darius/Rips in the pregames and getting our butts handed to us. We survived and endured. There should not be a penalty to players who have invested time or money to get what they have.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Next week, we will have the results for the Type Two aspect of this format. I am guessing that the results will be a little more favorable, since the new player ratio is higher, and most everyone's collections are on the same level.
