They are not in play. All pre-game cards are 'placed' into the pre-game before the game begins. Pre-Games have the ability to affect in game cards, like Divine Intervention has the ability to affect pre-games.
This is to remove some potentially bad situations in both formats (ceirdywn to name one of the abusers).

Your opponent does need an object in play to play Pearl Earing.

A) That would be incorrect, you may still use General Katana's ability to remove it from play. The reason is the card specificly says "Your Hunters cannot be removed from play by any non-Watcher card" General Katanas persona is not a card, but a Persona Power.
