DieCon 8, Collinsville, IL, May 30-June 1
Friday evening, Eric Thompson (Master TMO), Sean McLane (zodo) and myself played round robin in the Type 1 Lean & Mean. Eric played YDK, Sean was Zachary Blaine and I used Slan. I went undefeated, taking Sean's head. Eric won over Sean so we finished: Jeff (3), Eric (1), Sean (0).
We had a tremendous turnout for Saturday's events. We had 11 total players from 5 different states!
The Sat. morning Type 2 Pack Rat had 10 players using the std double elim brackets. Sorry I didn't write down all of the personas used, but there was quite a spread. The one big item discussed before the tourney was the new Hunter:Prone card (didn't remember the exact title). It was produced as a situation which in most everyones opinion (at DieCon) was WAY too overpowering in a sealed environment (or any format afaic). We ruled for DieCon tourneys to treat the card as an Event rather than Situation. Still nasty, but not broken.
Players: Todd Daniels, Chanda Davis, Rob Beard, the Shockey clan; Alben, Luke, Bryce and James, Sean McLane, Eric Thompson and Jeff Timi. Dallis Baker was on hand but bowed out to even the brackets (and build a deck for the afternoon). Todd Daniels took top honors and won a random Q (Slan, I think). Everyone else was treated to promos for their effort. A huge thanks to Dallis for providing some prize support since my shipment from Mike had (still) not appeared.
Sat. afternoon was the Type 2 constructed. We had 9 players this time, adding Dallis, losing Eric & Bryce. Only a couple of notes, Dallis hadn't heard the ruling in the morning about the Hunter:Prone card, so had to adjust his deck slightly when he played it and got the bad news. Sorry about that Dallis. Also, I think several of the decks were built with both Dawson & Horton pregames to allow Watchers AND Hunters. At the time I didn't think of it since I hadn't seen any of the Season Two cards, but am I correct in thinking that Joe & James are exclusive (only one or the other)? Oh well, it's all in fun anyway. This time Rob Beard took top honors. I believe he was using Duncan. A side note, there were 2 Kurgan decks, mine & Chanda's. His War Horse was very popular and many times it was said... 'Kurgan can do whatever he wants. He's Kurgan'...
The Shockley troop headed back to Kentucky after the afternoon game. That left us with 6 players for the evening Type 1 constructed. Since we had 3 Springfield, IL. and 3 Missouri (more or less) players, we used a team scoring format, 3 on 3. Dallis rocked by taking 2 heads (I forget his persona). I won 2 of my matches with Gen. Katana, getting my opponents prone early, but no heads. Unfortunately Eric's YDK didn't fair as well losing 3. In the end it was:
Todd, Chanda & Rob - 8
Jeff, Dallis & Eric - 6
Team Springfield each received a Q for putting down Team Missouri.
And then everyone packed up Saturday night and headed home :^(
Sunday morning's event was canceled since the only folks left were me & Eric. Sean was scheduled to run a Jade Claw game that morning so Eric & I invaded him for a bit of hack & slash. Unfortunately, we had to leave the game around noon to hit the road... 5 hrs back to Joplin, then 8-9 hrs more for Eric back to Texas.
Thanks to all that made the trek. This was my 7th straight DieCon (out of 8) and attendance is still well worth the effort. If I've misreported and details, PLEASE correct me! It's been a long week. If you'd like to add a note about your personas or decks I'm sure it would be appreciated by all.
Get ready for DieCon 9. Team Missouri will have it's vengeance! Have a great summer.
