There is no such thing as a special defense. The one card that could be argued as a special defense would be Master Swordsman. Crystal only refers to non-special attacks, which would be any red-gridded attack. Crystal states that you may replace a Basic Block with any defense, whether it's a block or a dodge.

Thanks for the confirmation, I assumed that it only would refer to master swordsman or block and strike. Headswillroll
