Itching to play some competitive Highlander, myself and 5 of my fellow Highlanders got together on Saturday night for an impromptu Highlander tournament.
The tournament was a basic Double Elimination tournament where a successful Head Shot knocks you out completely.
The tournament looked like this:
Myself (Terence) - Duncan
Matt K - Duncan
Dan S. (my co-worker at the store) - Zachary Blaine
Matt E. - Zachary Blaine
Steve A. - Grayson
Joe Y. - Felice Martin
Unfortunately there wasn't a large diversity in immortals, but more than half of our player base wasn't present for the tournament.
Round 1
Myself (Duncan) vs. Joe Y (Felice Martin)
The game went slowly back and forth, each of us getting down to 2 ability and praying for a successful attack. Luckily, I drew a Killer Precision to end a long game.
Matt E. (Zachary Blaine) vs. Matt K. (Duncan)
I didn't watch the match but all I know is a successful hidden Head Shot went through rather quickly into the game, ending the tournament for Matt K.
Dan S. (Zachary Blaine) vs. Steve A. (Grayson)
I managed to catch the tail end of this game and it was clear that Dan pretty much had Steve locked down. If I remember correctly, Dan won the game with 10 ability remaining but could not take Steve's head.
Round 2
Myself (Duncan) vs. Matt E. (Zachary Blaine)
Out of everyone I have played so far in 2nd Ed., Zachary Blaine has to be my toughest opponent. I guess I just have bad luck when it comes to guessing at the hidden attacks (and a lack of Master Block's in my collection hurts as well). It also didn't help that I couldn't keep any Feints in my hand to be effective, so Matt ended up defeating me but I kept my head.
Round 3
Myself (Duncan) vs. Joe Y. (Felice Martin)
This game didn't go as well as the other one had. I snuck some damage in quickly, but after the first couple of turns I was unable to get an attack through for the rest of the game. I then attempted an endless barrage of Head Shots but they were unsuccessful as well. A couple of well placed Over-Agressive Manuevers from him led to my demise and elimination from the tournament.
Matt E. (Zachary Blaine) vs. Dan S. (Zachary Blaine)
I wish I saw this match because I'm sure it involved no attacks that were face up. All I know is that Matt E. collected his second head of the tournament.
Round 4
Steve A. (Grayson) vs. Joe Y. (Felice Martin)
Steve rode the bye-ride due to the head shots, and he continued on by eliminating Joe.
Round 5
Steve A. (Grayson) vs. Matt E. (Zachary Blaine)
In true double elimination format, Steve had to beat Matt twice or take his head to win the tournament. After long and painful games, Steve managed to defeat Matt twice to win the tournament.
For prizes, all 6 players chipped in and we opened a full box of 2nd Ed. Beta 1 boosters and drafted rares with Steve getting a Divine Intervention and the choice of either The Prize Premium or There Can Be Only One, choosing There Can Be Only One, giving Matt E. The Prize.
More reports coming soon!
