Hi all, hopefully starting a new thread for this is acceptable, if not, I’d appreciate a mod messaging me with some advice.
I played a couple of games way back in the early days of the game’s existence, but frankly remember little to nothing about it. Recently, I inherited a large collection of cards that seem to cover first and second edition. Ive done a little poking around here, but I’m hoping to get a basic primer.
Are 1E and 2E cards as compatible as they appear to be? What about 3rd? Is there an easy way to identify the different editions and/or sets from each other? Type 1 and 2? I’m assuming this is different than editions, yes? What is the current tournament rules set, and is the stack of 1E rulebooks I have pretty much worthless?
Thanks for any and all info, and any tips on where to start.

highlandercardgame.weebly.comThis website has the Rulebooks as well as images of a lot of the later 2ed cards. Type One tournaments use cards from ALL sets, so yes you are correct in how compatible the sets are. The Rulebooks explain how to integrate. Where are you located geographically?

Fun. I also dusted off my old cards. I have mostly 1E cards. But I do have a couple of the vs. decks of 2E. I have been looking to obtain 2E cards and maybe some of the older 1E (Movie edition and Arms and Tactics, mostly). I live in Central Iowa. Any direction would be helpful.

Is there a difference between Types 1 and 2 beyond the available card pools? I notice they have different rulebooks (thanks for the link, btw), but is gameplay actually different?
I'm located in the SW corner of Missouri. I run a game shop here in Joplin, and while we had a pretty good scene for this game in its hayday, I don't know of anyone locally that still plays, and I'm pretty sure I now have the largest collection in the area.

Type 2 has some major changes. The major one is the attributes or gems. Each type 2 persona has stats that determine how many cards of each attribute can be included in the deck, attributes representing Master; Agility; Strength; Toughness; Empathy; Reason.
Aside from deck construction, those attributes are also used for checks and challenges, replacing the dice rolling mechanic used in Type 1. Because Type 1 doesn’t use the attribute system, Type 1 cards are not useable in Type 2. However, most Type 2 cards are backwards compatible and can be played in Type 1, the exceptions are marked with a small icon.
Other rules were changed when Type 2 hit, that also changed Type 1 but wouldn’t be in any of the printed rule books. Plots are now a separate card type instead of being a Situation. Allies are better identified and have some play restrictions. Illusions were introduced as a new card type.
As for 3rd edition, that was an attempt to clean up some terminology. They are legal for both formats the same as 2nd edition cards.
