Building your deck
Before you can begin playing, you should sort through your cards. You will be able to play with your starter deck right out of the box, but there are a couple of things to look for first:
Persona cards: You may have one Persona card. This card defines the theme of your deck and tells you what Persona Specific cards you may use. It also gives you the Attributes of your immortal and defines how many of each attribute icon may appear in your deck.
Attributes: For Sealed Deck Construction the Attribute Gems are ignored. For Standard play, these must be adhered to. You may included up to three times the number appearing on the Attribute Gem, so if you have an Agility of 5, you may include up to 15 cards with the Agility Gem in your Deck. Some cards do not include Attribute Gems on them and some have gems that do not count towards Deck Construction. These types of cards have the information listed on them and will explain how they work for Deck Construction.
Minimum and Maximum Deck Sizes: The minimum size of a deck is 50 cards. The maximum size of a deck is 75 cards. You can reduce your minimum deck size with an Edge card called Lean and Mean.
Card Titles: You may only include up to 6 of any card with the same title.
Master Cards: Master Cards are ancient knowledge and secret tricks learned and perfected over the ages. The Master Gem does not get a modifier on it and that is the number you may include of that particular Attribute Gem. Master Cards always cost an additional two Attribute Gems besides the Master Gem; these can be the same Attribute Gem or two different Attribute Gems and will never be another Master Gem.
Weapon of Choice: Are similar to a Persona and you may only include one Weapon of Choice Pre-Game card, unless otherwise stated on the Weapon of Choice. You may only use Weapon Specific in-game cards if you use the Weapon of Choice Pre-Game card associated with them. Weapon of Choice cards have a benefit for certain types of attacks, blocks and other cards. All Weapons of Choice also come with a drawback that you must abide by.
Weapon Specific Cards: Just like a Reserved card, you must be using the appropriate Weapon of Choice to include these cards and to play them during the game. There are some cards that allow you to play Attacks and Blocks from another Weapon of Choice. Currently there is not a way to include any other card type from another Weapon of Choice.
Reserved Cards: These cards are easily identified because they will have a sword on the title bar, over on the right hand side. If a card is Reserved, it means it can only be used by the Immortal whose name appears just below the title of the card. There are ways to include Reserved cards from other immortals in your deck through in-game cards and Persona Abilities.
Signature Cards: These cards will have the symbol of a sword with an "S" attached to it, on the right hand side of the title bar. Much like the Reserved cards, only the Immortal named on the card may include the card in his deck. However, under no circumstance can any other Immortal include this card in their deck. This is important because there are some Persona powers and card effects which will allow you to include cards in your deck that you are not normally allowed to; meaning you can use Reserved cards from other Personas, but not Signature cards. Also, if a Signature card has a Restriction number, the Restriction cannot be altered in anyway.
Immortal Specific Cards: These cards have the name of an Immortal in the title bar. In constructed play, you may only include these cards in your deck if you are using the appropriate Persona. You cannot put cards from an immortal into your deck that is not the same as the Persona card you are using unless you use a Persona ability or card effect that lets you do so. Immortal Specific card have two subcategories Reserved and Signature. Reserved Cards are easily identified because they will have a sword on the title bar, over on the right hand side. The Reserved cards symbol only effects deck construction in a certain tournament format and should be treated as a regular Immortal Specific card in Standard and Sealed Tournaments. Signature Cards: These cards will have the symbol of a sword with an "S" attached to it, on the right hand side of the title bar. Much like the Immortal Specific cards, only the Immortal named on the card may include the card in his deck. However, many cards have the name of an Immortal in the title bar but no Reserved or Signature symbols. In constructed play, you may only include these cards in your deck if you are using the appropriate Persona. Non-Reserved Immortal Specific Cards share the same background as Reserved cards, Signature cards and Persona Cards.
Restricted cards: While you can include a total of six cards with the same Title (the name of the card) in your deck, some cards are Restricted to a fewer number. These are called Restricted Cards and have a number printed on the far right hand side of the title bar. Your deck can't have more of that card than the number printed there. For example, if the Restriction number printed on the card is three, you could use up to three of that card, but no more. The Restricted number refers to that specific card, not the title of the card. For example: You can have six cards with the title "Slash" in your deck but only two where the slash goes across the upper row of the attack grid. Similarly you can only have two of the Upper Right to Lower Left diagonal Slash card and two Upper Left to Lower Right diagonal Slash for the Katana Weapon of Choice.
Basic Attacks: You are required to have at least one of each Basic Attack; there are nine Basic Attacks in the game. They are: Upper Left, Upper Middle, Upper Right, Middle Left, Thrust, Middle Right, Lower Left, Lower Center, and Lower Right.
Basic Defenses: You are required to have at least one of each Basic Defenses; there are six Basic Defenses in the game. All of the Basic Defenses are blocks. They are: Upper Left, Upper Center, Upper Right, Lower Left, Lower Center, and Lower Right.
